Short Mean Fiction Words and Pictures edition by William Dunlap Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

Short, Mean Fiction is the kind of book you can pick up and put down, but that doesn’t stop you from thinking about it when you do. There is the pervasive feeling of having suddenly been reformed as a camera obscura. Through those pinprick holes, the light that arrives casts a shadow as long as an August afternoon.

A ‘well-turned ankle or phrase’ tumbles from every page with the frequency of a cold war checkpoint. This is as it should be in the Deep South, where we celebrate eccentric and raconteur with equal enthusiasm. A fellow Southerner (and Mississippian, to boot), I find ‘respecting the laws of the unintended’ a mutually inherited heirloom, and at times, an inconvenient birthright. A great many of us have a fine eye for pondering sex, religion and its serpentine embrace over human institution. And over half a lifetime later I observe its scalpel effect, dissecting each curiously heated character in Dunlap’s ‘elegantly furnished mind.’

It is with such obvious relish that his tales are told – purloined and fabricated constructions in a turgid roil of rebel cavalry, sullied youth and midnight sports heroes, cakewalking into bacchanalia and exiting like concussive reports from rifle or senior Kappa’s gaze.

I once read in a truthful blog that, ‘finding the actual hard truth behind things is often a fool’s errand.’ Like the collector of life events and corks in Digressions on Viticulture, Dunlap invites the reader to dip into a bowl of reminiscence we know to be solely invention; the embroidery on remnant is in fact the fabric of the contract. In Beat It Like It Owes You Money, he writes, “I use other writing not to find my voice – I have no voice. Yet I’ve a career, and quite a successful one.” With his book, Short Mean Fiction, I’d say Dunlap has more than proved he has a voice. - Jondi Whitis
Great, great read!
Short and mean in the cool sense, you quickly get involved in a story, love the characters and then it ends. Then you can't wait to start the next story. Many times there's a twist and Dunlap's unique voice keeps you always engaged and guessing. Loved it!
What a wild little book! Short, engaging vignettes with funny drawings to boot! Great for any attention span. I liked it because I could put it down and pick it back up right where I left off! I will certainly be on the hunt for Bill's other works and gallery installations!
A multitalented Rennaisance Man. Mean and meaningful read.
